From late 1566 until 1573 the world of the talented writer and artist Xu Wei shrunk considerably, as he was confined to the Shaoxing County jail for the brutal murder of his wife, whom Xu believed had committed adultery. The time that Xu spent locked up is considered critical for the artist’s development as a graphic artist, and it is from this period that we first begin to see a cohesive body of Xu’s calligraphy. But how much do we know about Xu’s time in jail? And how might modern preconceptions of what incarceration implies affect our perception of Xu’s artistic production? This talk will address these questions in considering multiple aspects of site and space as scaffolding for understanding Xu Wei’s practice of calligraphy, especially in the first couple of years of his incarceration.
